What is TOEFL?

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a globally recognized English proficiency examination accepted by more than 12,000 universities and institutions in over 160 countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and the UK. TOEFL evaluates how well you can use and understand English in an academic environment, making it an essential requirement for students applying to international universities.

TOEFL is primarily offered in two formats. The TOEFL iBT, which is the most widely accepted version worldwide, can be taken at an approved test center or from home through the TOEFL iBT Home Edition. The TOEFL Paper-Based Test is available only in limited regions and is gradually being phased out, making the iBT the preferred choice for most students.

TOEFL Test Format

TOEFL assesses four academic language skills—Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing—within a compact two-hour test session. The Reading section introduces 2–3 academic passages followed by comprehension questions. The Listening section includes lectures and conversations that evaluate your understanding of spoken English in academic settings. The Speaking section requires recorded responses to academic and familiar topics, while the Writing section includes one integrated task and one essay-style question.

The total test duration is approximately 2 hours, and the overall score ranges from 0 to 120, with each section scored from 0 to 30.

TOEFL Scoring System

Most universities require a TOEFL score between 80 and 100, while highly competitive institutions may expect scores above 100. American universities generally accept scores in this range, while Canadian institutions usually require 90 or above. Australian universities typically expect 80 to 90, and universities in Germany commonly ask for 80 to 95. Selected universities in the UK also accept TOEFL scores in the range of 80 to 100 for programs that do not require IELTS specifically.

TOEFL Test Registration in India

TOEFL in India is administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service) and can be taken either at an official test center or through the TOEFL iBT Home Edition. The exam fee is approximately Rs.16,900, subject to variation based on city or payment method. Students can register directly through the official ETS TOEFL website.
