What is PTE?

The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) is a fully computer-based English proficiency exam designed for non-native English speakers applying for study, work, or migration abroad. It is accepted by universities, governments, and professional bodies across major countries including Australia, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA. The test is known for its AI-based scoring, quick result delivery, and fair, unbiased evaluation, making it a strong alternative to IELTS and TOEFL.

PTE is available in three formats. PTE Academic is the standard version for university and college admissions. PTE Academic UKVI is specifically approved by the UK Home Office for visa and immigration purposes. PTE Home supports UK family visa routes and is not used for academic admissions. ARK Education guides you in selecting the right version based on your university or visa requirements.

PTE Test Format

PTE Academic evaluates all four language skills—Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening—in a single two-hour, computer-based session. The Speaking & Writing section includes tasks such as reading aloud, repeating sentences, describing images, and writing essays. The Reading section tests comprehension and reasoning through fill-in-the-blanks, multiple-choice questions, and paragraph reordering. The Listening section includes audio-based tasks such as summarizing spoken text, identifying missing words, and answering comprehension questions.

All responses are either recorded or typed and scored by automated AI technology, ensuring a consistent and objective assessment of language skills.

PTE Scoring System

PTE uses the Global Scale of English (GSE), scoring students from 10 to 90. Each skill receives an individual score, which contributes to the overall score required for admissions.

Universities and colleges across major study destinations generally require:
Australia: undergraduate 50–58, postgraduate 58–65
UK: undergraduate 51–60, postgraduate 60–65
Canada (selected colleges): undergraduate 50–60, postgraduate 60–65
New Zealand: undergraduate 50+, postgraduate 58+

PTE scores remain valid for two years, allowing flexibility in admissions and visa applications.

PTE Test Availability & Fees in India

PTE is administered by Pearson and is available both at authorized test centers and through PTE Academic Online. The test fee in India is approximately Rs.15,900, and results are typically available within 48 hours. Students can register easily through the official PTE website.

Since PTE is entirely digital, students must develop fast typing skills, accurate pronunciation, and quick comprehension. Effective preparation includes practicing with official PTE materials, improving essay writing under time pressure, listening to academic audio resources, and refining speaking fluency through microphone practice.
