What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally accepted English proficiency examination recognized by more than 11,000 institutions in over 140 countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. It measures your ability to use English in both academic and everyday contexts, making it essential for students planning to study abroad.

There are two types of IELTS tests. The IELTS Academic test is designed for students applying to universities or professional institutions abroad and assesses whether you are ready to perform in an English-speaking academic environment. The IELTS General Training test is more suitable for individuals migrating for work or immigration purposes, as it focuses on practical, everyday communication. IELTS Test Format

IELTS evaluates four core language skills—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—conducted across two test sessions. The Listening section consists of four recordings and lasts approximately thirty minutes. The Reading section includes three academic or general texts and is completed in sixty minutes. The Writing section requires two responses, including essay writing and data interpretation, within sixty minutes. The Speaking section is an eleven-to-fourteen-minute interactive interview with an examiner.
The total test duration is roughly two hours and forty-five minutes.

IELTS Scoring System

Each IELTS component is graded on a band scale of 1 to 9, and the average of all four sections determines your overall band score. Most universities require a score between 6.0 and 7.5, with no section falling below 6.0. Institutions in Canada typically expect an overall band of 6.0 to 6.5, while leading universities in the UK may require between 6.5 and 7.5. Universities in Australia and New Zealand generally accept scores above 6.0, and many institutions in the USA welcome IELTS scores between 6.5 and 7.0, even though TOEFL is also widely used.

IELTS Test Locations & Registration in India

IELTS in India is administered solely by IDP India, offering both paper-based and computer-delivered options across major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Pune. The approximate test fee for 2025 is Rs.18,000, and registration can be completed directly through the official IELTS IDP website.
